ONE IN THE SAME

people are always shouting that they want to create a better future. it's not true.  the future is an apathetic void of no interest to anyone.  the past is full of life, eager to irritate us, provoke and insult us, tempt us to destroy or repaint it. the only reason people want to be masters of the future is to change the past.

HOMEBODY

And the air was full of Thoughts and Things to Say.  But at times like these, only the Small Things are ever said. Big Things lurk unsaid.

SWELL

Sometimes I can hear my bones straining under the weight of all the lives I'm not living.
- JONATHAN SAFRAN FOER

the waves brought in mountains (literally, very large piles) of kelp that had been torn off the ocean floor by the huge seas. tangled within the dead ocean forest were animals, like jellyfish and baby seals, also litter and remnants of human gluttony. the colour against the white, salty sand drew me to take these.

SALT

over the new year, my family (extended, included) and i spent a week in pringle bay, on the cusp of the notorious false bay. the wind galed through for two days bringing in dangerous swell, which took the lives of many over the fall of new year. tearing up the kelp, bringing in dead seals, i was mesmerised by the force of the ocean and the warmth of the water. we spent our days watching the waves, drinking good coffee, sleeping, reading and braving the rough undertow of the ocean.

WAR

And when we look in through the windows, all we see are shadows. And when we try and listen, all we hear is a whispering. And when we cannot understand the whispering, because our minds have been invaded by a war. A war that we have won and lost. The very worst sort of war. A war that captures dreams and re-dreams them. A war that has made us adore our conquerors and despise ourselves.
... We're Prisoners of War. Our dreams have been doctored. We belong nowhere. We sail unanchored on troubled seas. We may never be allowed ashore. Our sorrows will never be sad enough. Our lives never important enough. To matter.

- Arundhati Roy
